Hellersen Sports Clinic is a pilot clinic for an innovative sustainability project in the healthcare sector

Project aims to increase recycling rates in hospitals and conserve resources

The Sportklinik Hellersen is taking an important step towards sustainability and resource conservation: as a pilot clinic, the specialist clinic in Lüdenscheid is taking part in the "Grüne Gründungen.NRW" funding project and is working together with the company CIRCULARMED and the hospital association to develop innovative waste and recycling management systems for hospitals.

Sportklinik Hellersen is taking on a pioneering role with this forward-looking project. The aim is to establish a standardized, digitalized and sustainable waste and recyclables management system that significantly improves the recycling rate of hospitals. Currently, the average recycling rate for healthcare facilities is still below 35%.

"For us, sustainability and modern medicine go hand in hand. As a pilot hospital, we want to show that high-quality medical care and the responsible use of resources can go hand in hand. We are proud to be part of this project, which brings both ecological and economic benefits to the healthcare sector," explains Stephan Franz, CEO of Sportklinik Hellersen.

Project goals and process

Standards and development guidelines as well as a digital training tool will be developed over the course of the two-year project. This will be followed by a detailed inventory of the four participating pilot clinics before the concepts developed are implemented and further developed. In the end, the aim is to create binding standards that will benefit hospitals throughout Germany. In addition to Sportklinik Hellersen, the four pilot hospitals include Bonn University Hospital, Krefeld Hospital and Johanniter Kliniken Hamm.

Optimizing waste streams and reducing waste for thermal recycling not only reduces negative environmental impacts, but also cuts disposal costs. The Sportklinik Hellersen is thus making an active contribution to greater sustainability in the healthcare sector.
