The Rhine-Ruhr region is bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. With a sustainable concept, existing infrastructure and a strong sports medicine network, North Rhine-Westphalia hopes to win over the International Olympic Committee. One important partner in this process is the Sportklinik Hellersen, which, as a sports medicine examination center of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), has been setting standards in the treatment of competitive athletes for decades. This also benefits the patients of the Sportklinik Hellersen and society as a whole. "The expertise we build up for Olympic athletes is a benefit for all patients," emphasizes Dirk Burghaus, Chairman of the Management Board of the Sportklinik Hellersen.
Sustainability as a central argument
There are several arguments as to why the Rhine-Ruhr region is the perfect venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. "One of the most important is certainly the fact that 95% of the planned sports facilities are already available in North Rhine-Westphalia," explains Stefan Klett, President of the NRW State Sports Association (LSB) and President of Sporthilfe NRW e.V., the sponsoring association of the Sportklinik Hellersen. "Numerous soccer stadiums and exhibition halls are ready for immediate use. This speaks above all for sustainable Olympic Games. The only thing missing so far is an athletics stadium that meets international standards. But here, too, we have a sustainable approach: a temporary stadium is to be built, which will be developed into a residential and commercial complex as the center of a new city district after the Games. Cologne and Essen are in talks here."

Partner Sportklinik Hellersen: Medical care at the highest level
However, a successful bid does not only require a reliable infrastructure. Equally important is the medical care of the athletes at the highest level - an area in which the Sportklinik Hellersen has played a central role for many years.
"As one of six DOSB bases in NRW and part of the NRW sports family, the Sportklinik Hellersen is an important point of contact for serious injuries during the tournament," emphasizes Michael Scharf, Director of Competitive Sports at LSB NRW. "The extraordinarily good care is an important prerequisite - only in this way can important standards in top-class sport be maintained, such as the treatment or surgery of cruciate ligament ruptures within a time window of 24 hours after the accident. The best athletes also need the best doctors - and that is a given at the Sportklinik Hellersen."
The medical team at the Sportklinik Hellersen is also closely involved in competitive sport: Head Physician Dr. Stefan Nolte accompanies the marksmen as the association doctor and Dr. Tobias Schmenn looks after the women's national team as the team doctor, to name just a few examples. Dirk Burghaus emphasizes: "Our doctors bring their experience from national teams and international competitions directly into the clinic - that makes our care unique." In addition, top athletes from far beyond the region rely on the expertise of the Sportklinik Hellersen. The Sportklinik Hellersen provides a deeper insight into its sports medicine expertise in its current special Olympic edition of the clinic magazine Hellersen Insight. It also includes a detailed interview with Stefan Klett and Michael Scharf on the Olympic bid and the role of the Sportklinik Hellersen in this context. Olympic expertise as a benefit for society as a whole
It is not only top international athletes who benefit from the special expertise in sports medicine and sports orthopaedics. The Sportklinik Hellersen sees itself as a link between elite sport and society. "What we learn in competitive sport benefits all patients - from professionals to recreational athletes or people who have undergone hip or knee surgery," explains Dirk Burghaus. "Just as Formula 1 provides innovations for everyday life, our experience from the Olympics and international top-class sport also flows directly into the care of society. The Sportklinik Hellersen is our little Olympia - here, cutting-edge medicine becomes a benefit for society as a whole."
