Top medical performance meets top sport: Thorsten Schick visits the Sportklinik Hellersen

Chairman of the CDU parliamentary group visits the Sportklinik Hellersen to find out about commitment to sport, Olympic prospects and healthcare in the Märkisch district

The Sportklinik Hellersen treats around 50,000 patients every year and has established itself as a center of medical excellence. Top athletes, amateur athletes and non-athletes alike rely on this expertise. Thorsten Schick, Chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, has now visited the Sportklinik Hellersen to find out more about its performance and the ongoing specialization. In addition to this unique selling point of the region, he also found out about the commitment to sport and the prospects for the Märkischer Kreis.

The visit focused on the development history of the Sportklinik Hellersen as well as its profile as a highly specialized clinic and the latest progress made in recent months. Since 2023, the specialist clinic with the Hellersen Hospital has also made its professional expertise available in the United Arab Emirates. At the same time, arthroplasty has been systematically strengthened. One important step was the opening of the Robotics Center, which was officially inaugurated at the end of last year by NRW Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann and offers new, state-of-the-art surgical options. The Sportklinik Hellersen is also pursuing continuous expansion in other specialist areas and is constantly developing the German Spine and Scoliosis Center. Thorsten Schick held intensive discussions with Dirk Burghaus, Chairman of the Board of the Sportklinik Hellersen, and Stefan Klett, President of the NRW State Sports Association and Chairman of the sponsoring association Sporthilfe NRW e.V., and leading doctors at the Sportklinik Hellersen.

During the visit, the chances of a possible Olympic bid for the Rhine-Ruhr region were also discussed. It became clear that the Sportklinik Hellersen, as a medical competence center with its special expertise in elite sport, can play a central role in the healthcare of athletes.

"The Sportklinik Hellersen is a beacon of medical care and enjoys an excellent reputation far beyond the region. I was particularly impressed by how high-tech medicine and personal commitment go hand in hand here. It is a strong signal for the Rhine-Ruhr Olympic bid to have such a facility in our region," said Thorsten Schick.

"Sport and health are inextricably linked. With the Sportklinik Hellersen, we have a partner that has been demonstrating for decades how top medical services can support sport. This expertise is a real advantage for the bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games," explained Stefan Klett.

The commitment of the Hellersen Sports Clinic to top-class sport - in particular the role of individual doctors as team physicians - was also emphasized. "With the combination of high-performance medicine and sports care, we make an important contribution - not only for the Märkischer Kreis, but also for NRW and beyond.

"Supporting the Olympic bid for the Rhine-Ruhr region is an exciting and logical continuation of our commitment," emphasized Dirk Burghaus. He concluded: "We would like to thank Mr. Schick for his visit and are delighted with his interest in our work and the achievements of the Sportklinik Hellersen."

Thorsten Schick is responsible for constituency 1 of the Märkischer Kreis district, which includes Altena, Iserlohn, Werdohl and Nachrodt-Wiblingwerde.
