"The entire Märkische Kreis district and beyond will benefit from this"
The Sportklinik Hellersen welcomed the General Secretary of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia, Paul Ziemiak, to inform him about current developments at the specialist clinic and its innovative future projects. Together with Stefan Klett, President of the NRW State Sports Association and the sponsor of the Sportklinik Hellersen, Sporthilfe NRW e. V., and Dirk Burghaus, Chairman of the Spotklinik Hellersen, the focus was on key topics such as international cooperation, sports medicine expertise and the Rhine-Ruhr Olympic bid.
One focus of the exchange was on the international orientation of Sportklinik Hellersen. Paul Ziemiak has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2017 and has also been a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee since then. In this role, he deals in particular with foreign policy decisions and advisory issues. He is also involved in the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development and focuses on the Middle East in this context. This makes him all the more interested in the international activities of the Sportklinik Hellersen and Hellersen Hospital. The international branch combines German medical expertise with modern technology and innovative treatment concepts.

"With Hellersen Hospital, we are creating an international framework in which knowledge, experience and modern medicine are combined. This strengthens our professional development and opens up new perspectives for care," emphasizes Dirk Burghaus. Strategic partnerships promote medical exchange across national borders. This creates common standards and telemedical possibilities and expands treatment options for patients. The international demand for German medical expertise also offers attractive development potential for joint projects, training formats and the long-term development of specialists.
"Foreign policy has a direct impact on economic development in regions such as the Sauerland. This not only affects industrial companies, but also healthcare facilities. The Sportklinik Hellersen is an impressive example of how international presence, specialization, innovation and regional responsibility work together. This benefits the entire Märkische Kreis region and beyond," praised Paul Ziemiak during his visit.
Robotics in arthroplasty: new standards for precision
One example of innovation is the robotics center at the Sportklinik Hellersen, which opened at the beginning of March and marks another important step in orthopaedic care at the specialist clinic. The use of the innovative VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution from Johnson & Johnson MedTech Orthopaedics (DePuy Synthes) enables particularly precise knee endoprosthesis implantations. The real-time recording of the individual patient anatomy enables precise incisions to be made without CT or X-ray images and was specially developed for orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Stefan Schmidl, who has been Head Physician of Endoprosthetics Hellersen and Head of the Robotics Centre since May 2025, is an experienced specialist joining the department. His extensive expertise in robot-assisted arthroplasty is a key driver in the further development of the center.
Strong link between sport and medicine
Another key point of the exchange was the sports medicine expertise of the Sportklinik Hellersen and, in this context, its role in the Rhine-Ruhr region's upcoming Olympic bid. As a long-standing partner of organized sport, the specialist clinic looks after athletes from amateur, competitive and elite sport, including national teams and teams from the highest German leagues."The Sportklinik Hellersen is an important pillar of sports medicine care in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its expertise benefits the clubs, associations and, in particular, the athletes. It thus strengthens the entire sport in the state and plays an important role in the Olympic bid," explains Stefan Klett.
Joint look at the regional supply
Paul Ziemiak's visit offered the opportunity to reflect together on key developments at the Sportklinik Hellersen and discuss the challenges of regional care. "The continuous exchange between healthcare providers and politicians is an important contribution to securing and further developing medical care in the Märkischer Kreis in the long term," concludes Paul Ziemiak.
