Sportklinik Hellersen expands treatment spectrum at the German Spine and Scoliosis Center

From June 1: Endoscopic surgical spinal procedures under the direction of Hasan Salheen M.D.

The German Spine and Scoliosis Center at the Sportklinik Hellersen continues to grow: from June 1, the range of services will be expanded to include endoscopic-minimally invasive spinal procedures. This will be made possible by the experienced spinal surgeon Hasan Salheen M.D., who is joining the team as Head of Doctor. The clinic is thus specifically expanding its specialization in the field of special spinal surgery - with a procedure that is particularly gentle on tissue and patient-friendly.

In addition to the proven microscopic-minimally invasive procedures on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, state-of-the-art endoscopic techniques will also be used in future. For example, herniated discs, nerve root compression and spinal canal stenosis can now be operated on endoscopically. Certain forms of spondylolisthesis, degenerative scoliosis and osteoporotic fractures of the spine can also be operated on - a decisive advance in the treatment of complex clinical pictures.

"With our colleague Hasan Salheen M.D., we have gained an outstanding expert in the field of endoscopic spinal surgery. Together with his experienced team, who are also moving to Sportklinik Hellersen, we are further expanding our expertise," says Dr. Oliver Meier, Chief of Special Spine Surgery at the German Spine and Scoliosis Center at Sportklinik Hellersen. In addition to Hasan Salheen M.D., two of his experienced Consultant Physicians will also be starting work in Lüdenscheid on June 1.

A major advantage of the endoscopic procedure is that it is gentle: A skin incision of just 8 millimetres is all that is needed - muscles and stabilizing structures remain largely intact. This allows patients to be rehabilitated more quickly.

"This innovation is a strategic milestone for our clinic and gives us a pioneering role in this unique combination that is attracting national and international attention," says Dirk Burghaus, CEO of Sportklinik Hellersen. "Especially today, patients are specifically looking for gentle but highly effective treatment methods. Under the direction of Mr. Salheen M.D., we offer them a modern solution - and at the same time strengthen our role as a specialist center for spinal and scoliosis surgery."

Hasan Salheen M.D. specialized early on in the surgical treatment of spinal deformities - especially children's scoliosis. He deepened his knowledge at Zentralklinik Bad Berka before playing a key role in the development of spinal surgery at St. Elisabeth Hospital Gütersloh from 2016 as Section Head and later as Chief. He introduced endoscopic technology there in 2018 and continued to develop it further. With more than 3,000 spinal operations performed - over 1,000 of which were endoscopic - he is one of the most experienced and renowned surgeons in this field. Under his leadership, the clinic in Gütersloh also became an internationally recognized reference center and training partner for endoscopic spinal surgery.

"The Sportklinik Hellersen is a very renowned institution and Dr. Meier is known throughout Germany in the field of deformity surgery. In addition, the Sportklinik Hellersen offers me the most modern infrastructure for endoscopic spinal surgery in Germany as well as an interdisciplinary concept that follows the principle of conservative surgery before surgery," says Hasan Salheen M.D. "I fully share this philosophy. The patient is the focus at Sportklinik Hellersen. This was also a decisive factor in my decision to move to Lüdenscheid. I look forward to being part of this team in the future."

Hasan Salheen is married and has four children. In addition to medicine, his interests include art, literature and squash.
