Performance study with firefighting trainees

24 trainees of the district fire department went through performance testing at the sports clinic Hellersen

Twenty-four trainees of the district fire department underwent performance diagnostics last week in the Sports Medicine Department of the Hellersen Sports Clinic. The performance diagnostics are part of a study in which the prospective firefighters participate as part of their preparatory training. The study is used to check the development of performance during the training course.

Ten weeks ago, for example, the trainees completed an initial performance diagnostic at the start of their training, and now another one to record any improvements. The study is being conducted by sports science student Elisa Nestler and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Volker Höltke, training scientist in the Sports Medicine Department of the Hellersen Sports Clinic.

Elisa Nestler is studying sports science for a master's degree and has been a member of the volunteer fire department herself since she was 18 years old. She is also a trainer for the plant fire department. Therefore, she knows firsthand how important it is for fire department members to be athletically fit. "Due to the weight, for example in a breathing operation, the use of force is 30 percent higher. That's because the materials required and the protective equipment add another 30 kilograms to your own weight," she explains.

The training program she developed as part of the study is specifically designed to see a good training effect.
